PEI Modern Quilt Guild November 2019 Sew-In

Several members of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild gathered for a fun filled day of sewing on a chilly November Saturday. It's always nice to spend some time among friends before the holidays are in full swing and the hustle and bustle of this festive time of year takes over.

Jean has a great start to her holiday gifting...These rope bowls are gorgeous!!

Linda has been making these lovely leaves with her batiks.

Leigh Anne is continuing her efforts with her "Bits & Pieces" postage stamp quilt.

Dianne managed to score big on a recent trip to Value Village.

And was having fun playing in the scrap bin.

Cathy shared her recently completed "New Wave" quilt top.

Visitor WenLi dropped in to work on her table runner from the community school course that Heather has been teaching.

Velda, Heather, Janice and the rest of the group put the final touches on the QuiltCon 2020 charity challenge. Fusing the tree down and we all got the chance to place some leaves.

It is really stunning!! Can't wait to see the quilting!!

We have a whole lot of goodness planned for the November meeting as well!! We announce the winners of our Van Gogh Viewer's Choice (It's not to late to vote!!), and we will be revealing the postcards from our exchange with the Moncton Modern Guild. Andrea Tsang Jackson Trunkshow and Workshops

In lieu of an October meeting, members and friends of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild assembled for a Trunkshow featuring Andrea Tsang Jackson of 3rd Story Workshop.

From Andrea's Blog:

"Andrea Tsang Jackson is a textile artist, quilt designer, author and educator based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. After working in various design fields and settings ranging from architecture to museums, the quilting medium called to her as a way to explore place, belonging and agency. Her background in architecture has allowed her to understand design process from a variety of approaches; her training in life has taught her about the beauty in mess.

3rd Story Workshop is her tiny sanctuary where she feels the freedom to try new things and think with a clear head. Although her favourite colours to wear and design with are neutral, she loves to play with colour in her studio.

She was the 2017 Artist-In-Residence at the Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. Her first book, Patchwork Lab: Gemology, was recently published by Lucky Spool in 2019."

These are just a few of stunning quilts that were discussed...

Our Song, Your Reflection

A 2nd version using Alison Glass Shot Cottons

The back of the 2nd version was stunning!!! A Cotton Lawn fabric

A collaborative effort by Andrea's quilting community

The next few quilts are from Andrea's new book!!!

"Statement Piece"

"Jewelled Collar"

"Family Circle"

The back was just as stunning as the front!!

"The Here & Elsewhere Bee" Pier 21 collaborative quilt

Be sure to read the posts on Andrea's blog to learn about the inspiration and the process of curating this humongous quilt (12' x 12')!!! Hearing some of the stories from the contributors to this amazing quilt was inspiring. Learning about the process of layout and assembly was very interesting. The result is a massive quilt, that showcases part of Canadian heritage.

In addition to the Trunkshow, the PEI Modern Quilt Guild was pleased to host 2 workshops on the weekend.

Saturday was the Our Song: Swan workshop.

This class had us sorting our fabrics from light to dark to represent the sky. Most of us chose to work in shades of blue-y green, and a white swan.

Dawn (our rebel) used a batik strip set in shades of red to purple and a black swan to boot!! Stunning!!

Dianne gives us a smile between piecing...

Andrea discusses the paper piecing templates, sharing her method for perfect fabric placement without the guesswork!!

Linda didn't let the rain get her down.. (even when it turned to hail)!!!

Heather's is really coming along....

Nancy's taking her time, making the points line up just so..

Here's Andrea getting ready for the Y-seam demo...

Group shot!!

What a great day with lots of progress made... I hope to see some finished projects in the coming months....

Sunday's workshop was the Teardrop Gemstone.

To kick off the class Andrea discussed gemstones, and the way that light affects colour. Tone and contrast are also important when creating the illusion of fabric that sparkles!!

Andrea had us choose 10 fabrics from light to dark in a colour of our chosen gemstone. She then helped us to narrow down our selection to 6. There was lots of fabric sharing and encouraging opinions from everyone, helping to get the colours just right...

Here's a lovely Emerald, almost halfway there...

Heather's got all the pieces she needs!!

Cathy just has to assemble her 2 halves and add the borders....

Newbie Wenli has been taking lessons from Heather during Community school, and decided to attend the workshop.  A few days after the workshop she brought her finished block for Heather to see. Great job Wenli!!!

Velda also finished her block after the workshop and shared this sparkly Sapphire!!

On behalf of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild, I would like to thank Andrea for coming to share her story and quilts and teach us some of her designs. We learned some new tricks and techniques, that many of us will continue to use going forward on our own quilting journey.
