PEI Modern Quilt Guild July 2018 Monthly Meeting

Well, the cool temperatures have left us! (I think a lot of us would have those cool days back, in a heartbeat!!) It has been very hot and humid for the last few weeks. So it was a pleasure to spend an evening in the air conditioned space where we hold our meetings.

Our President was away having fun in the tropical sun, so Colleen our Vice President welcomed 14 members to this month's meeting.

We also had 3 guests join us for a special presentation!!!

The PEI Modern Quilt Guild was honored to present the " Modern Starburst Blossom" quilt to (West Royalty) Sobeys Manager - Carl Cudmore, Supervisor - Brenda Huston, and Children's Wish Foundation of Canada Development/Communications Coordinator - Jen Gillis.

The quilt was truly a group effort. Members of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild assembled blocks into the quilt top, during some of the Sew-In days that take place in the Sobeys Community room.

Cathy Victor designed the blocks and Heather Jarmyn assisted with the modern layout. Liz Dempsey completed the quilt with Beautiful custom quilting.

The quilt was displayed at the Pasedena, California's QuiltCon 2018, as part of their annual charity quilt challenge. QuiltCon is an international quilt show, known for showcasing Modern quilts. The challenge for 2018 was to design a quilt using the designated colors and the Modern Traditional Theme. All the quilts submitted under the challenge were to be donated to the guild's charity of choice.

We are proud to offer this quilt to support the Children's Wish, on behalf of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild and Sobeys West Royalty, in appreciation for the use of the Sobeys Community Room since the PEI Modern Quilt Guild's inception.

Sobeys (West Royalty) will be selling raffle tickets in the coming moths so please make sure you come in and buy some tickets for a chance to win this gorgeous quilt!!!

If you are unable to stop in to buy a ticket, but would like to help with a Children's Wish, please feel free to contact (902) 566-5526 or (800) 267-9474.
You should definitely visit their website too, it has lots of information about how to help grant a child's wish and be a hero.

Thank you to our guests for coming, and to our members for all their hard work!!! Good Luck Sobeys and Children"s Wish! We just know you are going to make a Child's wish come true!!!

What a way to start a meeting!!!

Next up we shared information about the upcoming Cheryl Arkison - Trunkshow and Workshops. We still have a few spots available for all events, and if you would like to attend or learn more, it's not too late. Contact peimqg@gmail.com for info or to reserve your spot.

For this month's program we were asked to bring in any vintage or antique quilts.

Gail had several examples to share. This first "Dresden plate" quilt is dated 1928, and it was completed by her grandmother for her mother. It has been well loved.

Her second quilt dates to the 1940's. It was constructed without a batting layer to keep it light for warm nights.

This blue and white "baskets" quilt is circa 1950's. It is completely machine pieced and quilted.

Her last quilt is dated 1954 and was actually Gail's baby quilt. Machine pieced and hand quilted. Wonderful that she still has it!!

Cathy was able to share this quilt dated 1959. It was made by Rita Doucette, who made the quilt using fabrics from leftover dresses and other clothes. This was the only quilt she ever made. Cathy was honored to rebind the frayed edges of the quilt in 2016 as a Christmas present for her Mother in Law (who is Rita's daughter).

Helen had a vintage quilt made by her grandmother in 1970. She made the quilt when she was 80.

Look at these vintage fabrics. They look like they could be modern fabrics from the present day. Just fantastic!!

Lastly Show & Share:

Janet was so happy to share her completed "Jelly Roll Mat". Even her hubby approves of the colors, he's requested it for his side of the bed!! Always nice when our loved ones appreciate our work!!

Dianne shared this stunning English paper pieced quilt. It contains 2139 pieces and measures 85" x 110". It took her 1 year to put together. Well worth the time and effort!!

I spy a fussy cut Maple leaf!!! Love it.

Helen shared her version of the "Starburst Blossom" quilt. I just love what she has done with the floating blossoms. The quilt has such wonderful movement. I love the whimsy!!! It makes me smile...

Lucinda was busy making "Long Time Gone" blocks. She had fun with 60 degree triangles and pineapple blocks. Soo tiny!!!

Cathy made good progress with her "Variegated Threads" blocks. All her thread units are ready for sashing!!!

Here they are all laid out. Pretty colors!!

Dawn was sewing a "New York Roundabout" table topper using her stunning vintage Singer Featherweight. Her featherweight was in immaculate condition!!! Serious envy happening!!

Janet shared her "Morse Code" QIP (Quilt in Progress). She is trying to decide what to do with the extra space  at the end of her rows. We can't wait to see what she comes up with!!
