PEI Modern Quilt Guild July 2019 Meeting

Summer is in full swing on PEI!! July has been full of sunshine-y days, with a sprinkling of showers to keep things lush and green. Some of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild members have been traveling or hosting visitors from away, but we still managed to have a full house for the July monthly meeting.

Vice President Velda welcomed 18 members (3 brand new!!) and 1 guest to the  meeting. A huge welcome goes out to guest Marj and our 3 newest members: Lori, Joyce and Monica!!

We are all super excited about the 1st annual "PEI Quilt Hang Out Day" taking place Aug 3rd across the Island. We encourage everyone to hang a quilt for display on your clothesline, or porch railing. If you take part in this fun day by hanging a quilt or travelling the Island and taking photos, please share them on Social media. We want to see all the amazing beauty, and talent that PEI has to offer. Share on Faceboook: PEI Quilt Hang Out Day On Instagram: @peiquilthangoutday and @peimqg!!  Susan shared plans for the quilt hang out day at Peakes Quay.  Contact Susan for the details.

We are also making great progress on our QuiltCon 2020 Charity Challenge concept. We are asking any members to share some of their text fabrics in the following colour range below... A 10" square or FQ would be appreciated. We hope to begin construction in the coming weeks, more details to follow.

The PEIMQG is also taking part in a 2019 COTY (Colour of the Year) swap with the Moncton Modern Quilt Guild. You may have seen a few sneak peeks of the postcards being made. If you were not at this month's meeting and have signed up for the swap, please make arrangements with Liz regarding your mailing address, as soon as possible.

This month's Medley Medallion prize draw was for the 3-patch chain block. We are up to Block 8 already!! Just a few more to go. This month we celebrated Christmas in July, thanks to sponsor Sew Blessed Quilters. Cathy and Velda took home some fun holiday inspired fabric bundles!!

Here's Cathy demonstrating next month's block for the Medley Medallion QAL. Block 10 (the Tri-Recs block) is made simple with the ruler set, or templates are also provided.

It's not too late to join in on the fun. The instructions for Medley Medallion can be found in Make Modern digital magazine Issues 25-30.

Lastly we had Show & Share:

Susan brought in this salvaged "Grandmother's Flower Garden" quilt. It has seen better days, the fabric was deteriorating in some places. But it's story was too interesting to let go. it includes fabrics from the 1920's to the 1950's.

The backing was pieced in this lovely frame design.

Roberta shared this beautiful embroidered table runner, she has recently finished. The techniques involved were time consuming, but well worth the effort!!

She also shared this beach-y "Coastal Paradise" quilt.

Here is a close up of the quilting design on the back. A perfect choice!!

Lastly she shared this "Terrific Teals" quilt. A 10" square friendly project made entirely from her stash!!

Lucinda shared 2 of her finished COTY postcards. Super cute!!

Gail has been busy making gift bags for her daughter. This design looks like a lotus flower when closed. Sew pretty!

Janice completed this stunning "In Full Bloom" quilt, from an Elaine Quehl workshop.

Velda shared this fun, modern mini "Summer Swirls" quilt. Faced binding is ideal for mini quilts.

Velda also shared this "Mixin it UP" quilt. Which will be in an upcoming Make Modern digital magazine. So many talented pattern designers in the PEI Modern Quilt Guild!!

Here is the back using left over pieces from the blocks used in the front. This quilt looks fantastic front or back!!

That wraps up another great meeting of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild.

PEI Modern Quilt Guild July 2019 Sew-In

Oh My!! How time flies... It seems like this Summer is moving way too fast. Summer is only a few short months and we all feel the need to cram as much activity into it. So much so, that we forget to stop and smell the wild roses.

I feel it's important to take a break from the hectic schedule and decompress with some sew therapy and camaraderie!! (Any excuse to sew is fine by me!!! LOL). Seven members of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild must have agreed with me, because we came with varied projects in hand...

Cathy was putting the binding on this nautical themed baby quilt, titled "X's and O's".

Janet has been enjoying using up some of her scrap fabrics. Using anything and everything to make slab blocks of varying sizes. Mixing newer modern fabrics with her more traditional scraps.

Here are a few of the blocks she completed at Sew-In.

Lucinda came with her knitting. She is working on a shawl. It is going to be stunning when it's finished!!

Here is her awesome knitting bag. Isn't it incredible? It suits Lucinda's personality to a T!

Gail has been busy going Green!!!! This box contains all kinds of goodies... Reusable paper towels, and produce bags will help with waste reduction for sure!

She has also been busy making cloth gift bags. What an excellent way to use up your fabric stash!!! (So you can buy more???)

Dianne was shortening this beautiful dress for a friend. We all had our thoughts on how to finish the edge. Whatever Dianne decides, her friend will look lovely.

Jean next project is a quilt from Block magazine. "Triangle Tango" will feature some of her Tula Pink "Zuma" collection.

Here's Jean with her first block completed!!! Full steam ahead!!

Velda was working on finishing her postcard for the swap due in September. I love seeing everyone's take on the Colour of the Year!! (If you take a peek in the corner you can see a mini that Velda will share at the July monthly meeting. She was just finishing up the binding).

What a lovely day of sewing among friends!!

Don't forget we love having visitors!! If you happen to be on PEI this Summer reach out to us via email: peimqg@gmail.com or on IG @PEIMQG so we can fill you in on the details of our next meeting or Sew-In!!!
