PEI Modern Quilt Guild June 2019 Meeting

Happy Summer!! It's finally here... (sort of). The weather has been a mix of sun and rain. Warmer days, with the odd cold one mixed in, just to keep everyone on their toes.

We welcomed back several members from Quilt Canada this year, 4 members were in attendance (Heather, Susan, Julea and Velda all got to spend some time enjoying the amazing talent on display, the lectures and workshops, and don't forget the fabulous vendor mall!!).

Three of our members were also thrilled to have been juried into the National Show!!! Congratulations to Julea, Cathy and Heather (2) for their accomplishments! Please select the link for the info on each quilt.  Two other members long arm quilted Heather's quilts below.

While at Quilt Canada, Susan was able to donate 130 Quilts of Valour blocks made by our members to QOV. Quilts of Valour hopes to have 20,000 quilts completed by 2020. Please visit the link if you are interested in making blocks or quilts for this excellent charity.

We will also be sending out Green heart blocks to New Zealand to help support "Healing Hearts for Christchurch" with their efforts.

Velda's choice for Bock Lotto was "Wonky Trees" a tutorial by Amy Smart of Diary of a Quilter. The winner of these 67 blocks was Dianne, who graciously gifted them to Velda because of her fervent admiration for them LOL.

Our next Block Lotto block is for Scrappy Fish Blocks, which can be found at bonjourquilts. These blocks will be due at the August meeting.

The members of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild were excited to vote for their favourite QuiltCon 2020 charity quilt challenge concept. The theme this year is "Text" and the colour scheme is a greyscale from white to black. It's going to be a lot of fun.

Next up was the Medley Medallion Quilt Along. Due this month were the Drunkard's Path blocks.

We had 2 winners: Janet and Jean won these beautiful panels from sponsor Sew Blessed Quilters.

Next month is the 9-patch chain blocks, which Cathy demonstrated to the group. This block is super quick because the units are assembled with strip pieced units.

Lastly we had our Show & Share:

Cathy rushed to finish the binding on her "Awesome Ocean" quilt, so she could share it at the meeting.

She also shared a quilt that has been sitting in her closet of finished quilt tops. Cathy is making an effort to get more of these tops completed. One down, so many more to go...

Jean shared this adorable coaster, which she had made earlier in the day with another group of quilty friends. This looks like it would be fun to make in lots of funky fabrics!

Leigh Anne has been using lots of fun techniques while pattern testing this super cute "Canned Pineapple Hoop" for Andrea Tsang Jackson of 3rd Story Workshop.

Susan shared a banner quilt for the Green Shores Quilt Guild.

She also had some fabric goodies to share including this awesome collection of remnant fabrics

And in an effort to free up some of her stash she brought some Tula Pink fabrics to offer to any interested members.

Janice has been making these lovely book covers for her daughter and her daughter's friend.

Here is a better shot of her lovely work...

Roberta has been finishing up quilty projects. This pretty "Beach Paradise" quilt has curved borders.

"What Does Baby Say?" is a bright and cheerful quilt....

"Love you to the Moon" is so soft and snuggly. These quilts weren't made for anyone in mind, but it's always nice to have a few baby quilts ready for whenever they might be needed.

"Blushing Peonies" is a stunner made from 2 1/2" strips. This fabric line is simply gorgeous!!

Heather has been busy finishing up a couple quilts lately. Both of these quilts made an appearance at the PEI Modern Quilt Guild Retreat. Great job getting them completed!! The first is a wedding gift for her brother,  title yet to be determined.  Quilted by member Liz, owner of Blueberry Cove LongArm Services.

Here is the pieced backing which features the couple's initials.

The second quilt is "Pretty Little Dots" using a collection of prints by Zen Chic, quilted by member Colleen.

This month's meeting was chock full of eye candy and exciting news for the coming months.

PEI Modern Quilt Guild June 2019 Sew-In/Postcard workshop

Spring has totally sprung here on PEI!! The days have been filled with sunshine and beautiful blooms, with the occasional shower to keep things green and growing. Summer is not very far away, which for many, means less time spent indoors sewing and more time spent out enjoying the warmer weather with family and friends or taking that much needed vacation.

The PEI Modern Quilt Guild gathered for a super fun filled Sew-In, which was focused on a Postcard workshop. We are super excited to be taking part in a COTY (Colour of the Year) swap with the Moncton MQG. Many of our members had never made postcards and so we asked that anyone with experience could share their insights on this fun project. Our charity Coordinator, Dianne rose to the occasion and came with supplies and insight galore.

We were encouraged to play with designs and themes as practice for our final postcard submissions. It was an incredible day spent with friends learning some new techniques. Dianne brought scraps and trims galore to inspire creativity.

Thank you to Roberta for dropping by with a few examples of the postcards she's made.

Maritza was inspired by this text fabric. Sentiments that show her interests and passions.

Here's Liz's practice postcard, really clever use of a fussy cut star!!

Here are some photos taken throughout the day...

Here is a group shot of the members in attendance, except for Dawn and Roberta who left a little early because of family commitments.

I can't wait to see the finished results!! We all had so much fun. Thank you Liz for organizing the Postcard swap and Dianne for hosting the workshop!!! Great teamwork ladies!!
