PEIMQG August 2017 Meeting

Summer is winding down, here in PEI. The days still have plenty of heat, but the evenings are beginning to cool down offering many the opportunity to open their windows for some refreshing night air (even if the sound of crickets chirping is all you can hear!!)

This month's meeting was lead by Vice President Colleen, as Heather J. was away. Colleen opened the meeting by welcoming 12 members and 2 guests. Thanks for joining us Holly and Monica!

We are happy to confirm that we will have 2 fantastic guests for October 2017 & 2018.

Paul Leger will be with us for a trunkshow, in lieu of our October 26th, 2017 meeting.

Cheryl Arkinson will be with us in October 2018, for a trunk show and 2 workshops. Details to follow in the coming months.

We started the evening with some Tips and Techniques led by Cathy. She discussed 4 different methods for making Half Square Triangles.  (These may be showing up in the PEIMQG Mystery Quilt-Along - WINK, WINK) We discussed the Pros and Cons for the different methods demonstrated.

July's Queen Bee Dianne was unable to attend the meeting , but we collected some of her Bee blocks and we will bring them to the September meeting.

This month Velda was Queen Bee and she has selected the following "The Plus Side" blocks. If you were unable to attend the meeting, please make arrangements to get the kits required to make Velda's blocks.

Show & Share

We had some great projects to Show & Share this month.

Roberta had this cute Baby Zig-Zag quilt to share. It will be donated to our Foster chilldren charity quilts.

Velda had a couple quilts for the Foster children too. Here's her "Dancing Girls"

and her "Simple Summer Sampler". Both of these quilts are awesome.

Velda also shared her "Long Time Gone" Quilt. A-Mazing!!!

Here is a closer look... WOW!

Helen brought in the results of her Queen Bee blocks. These "Log Cabin" blocks made the most adorable wall hanging. I love that my block is trying to escape!!

Lucinda shared her fabric pull for the PEIMQG Mystery Quilt-Along. Love those grunge Dots!!!

Janice shared her Baby Quilt. We all drooled over the awesome quilting.  Fantastic!! I loved how soft it looks.

Jean returned to us after being away most of the summer, and she brought some of her fabric finds. These gorgeous Low volume prints were fun and varied.  My fave was the little piggies!!.  Some of these Low volume prints will be used in her "Long Time Gone" project that she is participating in as a Monthly Quilt-Along with her friends throughout Canada. Can't wait to see the progress she makes in the months to come.

Linda shared another Foster children charity quilt with the group- one of the quilts completed during the Charity Sew-Day we had a few weeks ago. Great Job Linda!!

Here is the back:

Linda also brought in her completed fish wall hanging. " Matilda" was a project that was taught by the talented Margaret Jessop during a retreat this summer.

Here's a close up, love the bubbles!!!

Great meeting everybody!!!

August 2017 Charity Sew-In

This past Saturday was spent at a member's sewing space.  It turned out to be a very rainy day, perfect for sewing!

We are making quilts for Foster Children on the island and we decided to dedicate our August Sew-in to make more tops.  Five members gathered together to focus on this endeavour.  Amid much chatting and laughter, we were productive, really we were!

One of our members provided lots of jean squares to add colourful fabrics from our stash around them. We set up sewing machines and three members were sashing jean pieced blocks together.  You can see Heather C, Linda and Lydea hard at work piecing the blocks together, while Susan was ironing fabrics.

Heather J. was cutting strips and put together this top.  Pretty bright...

Susan was working on piecing a back.

Some other completed tops!

We also saw some completed quilts.  A donation from one of Colleen's clients which was hand quilted!  So cute!

And here's Cathy's fabulous quilt!  Lots of fussy cut foxes in this quilt which is so reminiscent PEI!

We did stop to eat.  There was a brown bag lunch and a treat at tea time with a great rhubarb crumble and frozen yogurt. Thanks Susan! Yum!

Thanks everyone for their camaraderie, laughs and great tops and quilts!  We will be collecting quilts for our November meeting, when we hand them over to be delivered to the children.

PEIMQG July 2017 Monthly Meeting

Summer here in PEI is in full swing!!! The days have been chock full of sunshine, and I'm sure everyone has been enjoying time at the beach, and soaking up the Vitamin D. Am I the only one wishing for a bit of rain???

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the meeting. Dawn, Heather J. and Colleen made sure I got the whole scoop on what I missed though.

Heather J. opened the meeting by welcoming 15 members.  She reminded members that everyone was at different stages of their quilting journey, so in order for all to enjoy the meetings, asks that one person talk at a time and if anyone needs to hand off items, etc. to other members, please do so before or after the meetings.

We are so excited that Paul Leger will be here October 26th, 2017 for a Trunk show, held at the Hillsborough Hall Community Centre. More details to follow.

AND....

Cheryl Atkinson will be here in PEI October 2018.We will be hosting a Trunkshow in lieu of our October 2018 meeting. Stay tuned for the location and times.

We have lots of Quilt Shows and Exhibitions coming up...
Fibre Arts brochures were passed out.
We also had a reminder about the St. Paul's Quilt Show in September. We encourage everyone to enter something!!
I hope to see some awesome quilts from the PEIMQG at Old Home Week too.

Tips & Tricks:

Heather J. brought in some of her favorite rulers to demonstrate for us. She showed us her "BlocLoc", mini 3 1/2" and "Quilt in a Day" rulers. She then gave a demo on her HST ruler, used for trimming perfect HSTs.

Susan showed us her Easy Angle HST ruler.

Heather J. also showed us a 2 color binding method using 1" for front fabric and 2" for the back fabric, and a mitered join.

Beginning in August, Cathy will be presenting Tips & Tricks related to the upcoming PEIMQG Mystery Quilt-Along.

Queen Bee:

Susan was June's Queen Bee. She received these Kindred Pinwheels blocks:

Dianne has requested that her beemates make these super cute blocks:
