PEI Modern Quilt Guild September 2019 Meeting
September's meeting of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild was all about eye candy!! We wrapped up several endeavours at this month's meeting, which was a good thing, because we only have 1 more meeting in November 2019.
Heather welcomed 22 members and 2 guests. It was a full house to be sure!! We happily made room for Kelly and Alice and settled into business.
Members of the PEI Modern Quilt Guild have been busy selling raffle tickets on this year's "SuperNova" quilt.
You may have seen us at the Eptek Art & Culture Centre, at Peakes Quay for "Quilt Hang Out Day" and at the Dundas Plow Match. We would like to thank everyone who stopped by and admired the quilt on display and for everyone who purchased a ticket, we appreciate your support!!
Congratulations to Gordon Jackson, who was the lucky winner drawn at the September meeting!!

We have gathered all the Postcards for the 2019 Colour of the Year Swap with the Moncton Modern Quilt Guild. I can't share any photos yet, you'll have to come back for the November blogpost to see them!
The final block of the Medley Medallion Quilt Along was the Flying Geese Block. Participating members brought in their blocks for a Fat Quarter Bundle from Fabric, Crafts-N-More.
Members have until the January meeting to complete their Medley Medallion projects for a chance at some Super, Duper prizes!! I can't wait to see what everyone makes!
Our Van Gogh challenge was also due this month, and the results are amazing! We have some fun fabric prizes that are being offered to the "Viewer's Choice" winners. So please check out this link for the post where you can vote for your favourite! The poll will remain open until just before the November Monthly meeting.

She also finished this adorable "Baby Disappearing 9-Patch" quilt.

A casserole carrier...
and some purse/handbags made by upcycling old denim jeans and some men's ties.
Lucinda has been continuing with her efforts to finish up some of her UFO's (UnFinished Objects). This "Pastiche" wall hanging is ready for quilting and binding!
Heather can't wait to sink her teeth into this modern triangle book...
Velda shared this sparkly "Mini Diamonds" quilt. She has been challenging herself to complete a mini a month. Sounds like fun!!
She also has been collaborating on a QuiltCon 2020 charity challenge quilt with some of her online quilty friends. This Inspirational quilt top was assembled by Velda, using blocks that were made by the members in her group from all around the world!! Thank you for sharing it with us before the next stop on it's journey!!
Jean has been travelling this Summer, but she made sure to stop and pick up these fun and quirky gnome fabrics and a book to help with her quilting!! Can't wait to see where this fabric will turn up!!
Leigh Anne let loose with some scraps from Maiwa Hand Prints brought back with Susan from her trip to Quilt Canada.
She also shared this gorgeous "Fractured Hexies" quilt which features paper-pieced hexagons in ombre fabrics, hand-appliqued onto a machine quilted background.

Cathy wanted to share her "Over and Under" Queen Bee quilt. The blocks in this quilt were made by members of the guild, which she then assembled into this queen-sized quilt. It only took 3 years to get this far, but who's counting, LOL.

PEI Modern Quilt Guild September 2019 Sew-In
September brings cool weather, fall colours and the start of another school year. This year, September came in with a vengeance!!! Hurricane Dorian left much of PEI (and the Maritimes) without power for many days, and the loss of thousands of trees and shoreline has left some areas unrecognizable. PEI has such a wonderful sense of community, everyone banding together to offer support where they could. A huge Thank You to the men and woman working for Maritime Electric and from away, who have worked so hard to restore power as quickly as they could, so we could all get back to our sewing!! (LOL)
This month's Sew-In was focused on the 2020 QuiltCon Charity Challenge.
The theme this year is "text" using a gradient palette of white to black. 6 of our members met in the morning to strategize and begin assembly on some of the words to appear in the quilt. Velda, Janice, Linda, Lucinda, Heather and Dianne have things well in hand...
Here is Janice's word...
and Heather's...
Cathy arrived after lunch to find that most of the members had already left. Roberta and Linda were on their way out, so that left only Dianne and Cathy for the afternoon.
Cathy continued working on her "New Wave" quilt. It's really coming together now!! Just a few more rows....
Dianne recently finished this cheerful quilt. Scraps, and Scraps galore!! Next up for her another English Paper Pieced project...
Here are a few reminders for the upcoming meeting:
The swap with the Moncton MQG is due at the September meeting. Be sure to bring in your finished Postcard!! Here's Roberta's postcard. I wonder who the lucky recipient will be?
The Van Gogh challenge is also due this month. There will be some fun prizes available to those who participate. We will be hosting a viewer's choice poll here on the blog, so be sure to come back to cast your vote!!
The final block of the Medley Medallion Quilt Along is also due, so be sure to bring in your Flying Geese units for a chance to win a great prize. I can't wait to see all the finished quilts at the January meeting!!
Lastly, we will be drawing for the winner of our "Supernova" Raffle quilt during the meeting. It's not too late to buy a ticket for a chance to win this beautiful quilt!! Email us at peimqg@gmail.com or reach out on Instagram: @peimqg by September 25th. The draw date is September 26th. (Please be patient waiting for replies to emails, the account is monitored after 6pm Atlantic Standard Time).

We had a great weekend, getting to chat with Islanders and visitors alike. A huge Thank You goes out to the Dundas Plowing Match staff and their volunteers for making us feel so welcome.
The following events are planned for the Brackley Commons Community Centre, 14 Union Road, Charlottetown, PE, C1C 1C2:

Now, back to the August meeting...
Heather welcomed 14 members and 2 guests to the meeting. Welcome to Margaret and Rose Marie!!
Heather was pleased to announce that the inaugural "PEI Quilt Hang Out Day" was a huge success! Did you take part in "PEI Quilt Hang Out Day"?

We were excited to hang our quilts at Peake's Quay, this year. It was a perfect day, spent chatting with folks enjoying the long weekend. Thank you Susan for arranging the location and to all the volunteers who helped set up!
We look forward to showcasing even more of our members quilts next year!! We hope "Quilt Hang Out Day" will continue to grow as an annual event.
Next up we had a Block Lotto Draw.... 85 fish blocks were turned in at this month's meeting, and the winner was Lucinda!!! Lucinda then graciously gifted all the blocks to one of our newest members Lori!! Her excitement and enthusiasm gave us all a good chuckle. We can't wait to see what Lori does with these fabulous blocks.
Our next Block Lotto block is Lucinda's choice "Inside Out Flowers" a 3D block made by folding and stitching a 6" square of fabric. Here she is showing us how it's done.
Here is the finished block framed with 2 1/2" strips.
Dianne, our charity coordinator has partnered up with the Cancer Treatment Centre / QEH. Members are asked to make "Chemo Comfort Pillows and Med Bag Holders".
Next up, we had a draw for the Medley Medallion Quilt Along. This month's prize was sponsored by "Buy-Rite" in Montague.
Next Month's block is the final block in the QAL. Here is Cathy demonstrating the "Flying Geese block". She demonstrated the "No Waste Method"
and the Bonus HST method.
Here is a bonus block completed using some of the bonus Half Square Triangles trimmed to 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".
We are getting very excited about the upcoming Andrea Tsang Jackson (3rd Story Workshop) Trunkshow and Workshops. This is a reminder that interested PEI Modern Quilt Guild members must have their payments in by the end of August to secure their spots.

Beginning in September we encourage non-members to contact us peimqg@gmail.com if they would like to take part in any of the workshops. (Dates and times listed below). The cost for non-members is $75.00 per workshop, and $5.00 for the Trunkshow.
It's also not to late to purchase tickets for the PEI Modern Quilt Guild "SuperNova" quilt. The winner will be drawn at the September 26th meeting. If you would like a chance to win this gorgeous quilt please contact the PEIMQG via email: peimqg@gmail.com or on Instagram:@peimqg. Tickets are $2.00 each, 3 for $5.00 or 9 for $10.00.
Show & Share
Velda shared this stunning "Diamond Dash" quilt, made with 60 degree triangles.
Janice had so much fun making this "Giraffe's in a Row" baby quilt. The pattern is by sewfreshquilts.
Dianne has found another treasure at a local thrift store!! This Summer quilt had most of us baffled as the layers were not secured in any way!! Great find Dianne!
Lucinda has been busy with non-quilt related hand crafts. This "Cotton Flower Mesh Shawl" is beautiful.
Then she shared this "Heirloom Shawl (from Hell)" It may have given her some trouble, but the end results are gorgeous!!
Lastly Susan had several items to share, This Art Gallery curated bundle contained 10 Fat Quarters.
She also picked up a few Jelly Jar openers, an easy and quick project that would be a lovely gift.
Susan also spoke of her recent trip with guest Margaret to the Halifax library. She couldn't resist picking up this book bag featuring a fresh Modern design.
