PEIMQG October 2017 Sew-In

The weather in PEI has been wonderful this month so far, Yes, we've had some crisp mornings and some rainy days, but the sun has been shining and the temperatures have been pleasantly crisp. I like nothing better than throwing on a sweater and enjoying the cool Autumn temperatures, while sipping on my coffee, or taking a walk enjoying all the colours this season has to offer.

The PEIMQG got together on Saturday for some fun, sewing, cutting and catching up. 
We had labels to attach to charity quilts. Jean, Linda, Dianne, Heather J. and Janice all spent some time sewing on labels.

Heather J. was also busy cutting out pieces for her "The Canadian Sampler Quilt" which was sponsored by Sew Sisters Quilt shop. I can't wait to see these blocks come together.

Lucinda was working on her "Blue Ridge Beauty" quilt, a Bonnie K Hunter design.

Jean was also working on binding her "Points" quilt.

Dawn was busy making a sample for community school. She and Colleen have decided to offer "chopsticks" as a class to teach this year.

Janice brought in her "Tessellation" quilt for donation. Love how bright and cheery it is. It has so much movement!

Cathy had her "almost" finished "Patchwork City" quilt to share. Just the borders left to attach and then it will be set aside for quilting.

Susan dropped in with a friend, to drop off a few more charity quilts.

Roberta and Gail also stopped by for a visit and a chat, later in the afternoon.

What a fun day to spend with friends, I had a great time!

Guest Blogger October 2017

This month I am so pleased to introduce our Guest speaker Paul Léger. Paul is based in the National Capital Region and our president has known him for a number of years.  He is a member of the Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild and is a gifted quilter and teacher. Like so many of us, Paul started out using Traditional designs and techniques. Now his work shows his love for interpreting simple "objets d'art" into Modern quilt designs.

Paul enjoys arranging and attending the All Guys Quilting Retreat. This group of men have been getting together twice a year for almost 10 years and has grown in numbers. He recently had the opportunity to discuss the retreat with Nancy Zieman! You can see his fantastic interview here.

Q & A:

1. What do you love about (Modern) quilting?

I love solid coloured fabrics. I loved them even before it was fashionable. On some levels, I like the simplicity of some of the modern quilts, and basic geometric shapes.

2. Where do you draw inspiration?

I’d say that like most people, I am drawn to books and patterns. I am always looking for ideas. I look at building, signs, interlocking bricks, I even look at clothing. You never know from where an idea will come.

3. What are you currently working on? (Can we have a sneak peek?)

I am currently working on a pattern of a quilt which I made for the Quilts at the Creek show this past July. After posting the quilt on Facebook, there were so many requests for the pattern and workshops, that I had to shift gears. Although it is not a modern quilt, there is a lot of negative space.

4. Solids or Prints?

Solids all the way, BUT there are a lot of very cool modern prints that I love. One day I will use them, instead of looking at them sitting on my cutting table.

5. Precuts or Stash?

Mostly stash, but I have been known to get some precuts, especially jelly rolls. I’ve also been known to buy charm packs and layer cakes. One must, when there is a great sale!

6. Favorite Tool/Trick you can’t live without?

Difficult to answer since I can only pick one. I have so so many tools around my sewing machine and work area. While sewing, I would say that my favorite tool is scissors. If I am at the cutting table, then rulers would win. As for a trick, I have one that I love using when working with diamond shapes and triangles. It involves a piece of ¼” tape.

7. What’s your Favorite Blog and/or Designer?

I cannot say that I have a favorite Blog or designer. I do have two designers/artists that are from the Ottawa area; Michèle-Renée Charbonneau  (http://quiltmatters.blogspot.ca/); and

Alison Harle (@alisonharle on IG).  They are totally different in what they do, but their works speak to me. I truly admire them both and am always in awe when I see their new pieces.

8. What’s one thing we should know about you?

I have over a 1000 spools of thread in my studio, and like all quilters, I never have the right colour.

PEIMQG September 2017 Monthly Meeting

It's hard to believe that Autumn is here at last. The temperature has been very warm, and has felt more like Summer than Fall. But, it will be winter before too long so we will enjoy the warmth while it lasts.

Heather J. welcomed 19 members to the meeting this month, One of whom is a brand new member!!! Welcome Marilyn, we are pleased to have you join us.

Lucinda and Dianne had an update for us about the Foster Children Charity Endeavour. We will have over 30 quilts to be donated at the November meeting!!! Great Job everyone!!! 

If you still have a quilt you want to donate for this endeavour, please be sure to bring it to the Trunkshow in October, so that Dianne can get them ready for presentation in November.  They will be a lovely Christmas surprise for some of PEI's Foster children.


August Queen Bee Velda collected these gorgeous "The Plus Side" blocks. I can't wait to see the final layout.

September's Queen Bee was Heather J. and she has asked her beemates to make the "Paper Clips" block from the book "Modern One Block Quilts".

 She has provided all the fabric needed to complete the block but if you have an awesome kona solid purple you would like to use, feel free to use your own in place of the purple. (Just be sure to return Heather's Purple back to her when you bring in her completed block.)

Heather also shared her recent Book and Fabric finds:

The Book: "Quilt Folk "Issue 2 is centered around Eastern Iowa. Did you know that Iowa has more quilt shops per capita than any place on earth? I can't wait for my chance to delve into this rich source of knowledge.

She also stopped into "Quilt Junction" during her travels this summer and brought back some lovelies by "Zen Chic". 
Here's a little bundle of "True Blue" and the perfect pattern to compliment them.

And another kit featuring the "Hey Dot" fabric line. 

Next up Cathy demonstrated 2 method's for making 3-patch blocks. Fast and efficient strip piecing or a Scrap happy method that has you cutting all the pieces in advance. 

Mystery Quilt-Along Show & Share

The members of the guild and the online community have been busy this month making Clue #1 for the PEIMQG Mystery Quilt-Along. Here are the guild member's HSTs (Half Square Triangles). I love all the variety we are seeing.

We had a large number of quilted goodies/projects to share this month, First up is Velda with her "Caw-Caw-phony" quilt.

Here is a close-up of those adorable birdies!

And the back is pretty awesome too. No bird left behind!

Selina shared her fun Halloween quilt, that started as a panel and has grown into this lovely piece. 

Susan shared her "Celtic Knot" table runner. Love those poppies!!

Heather C. shared her Lobster wall hanging. "Jenny" named to honor her friends Dawn and Glen, who always ask for some PEI Lobster.

She also had a couple quilts to share. These have been earmarked for charity. The first is almost finished, She just has the binding left and then she can call this one done!! 

The second quilt top features big blocks, to really showcase the fabrics. Great job Heather C!

Roberta was next and she had several projects to share. Here's her "Whirlwind Stars" quilt. 

Next was her " Butterflies Take Flight" quilt. I love all the negative space!

She also shared her completed Queen Bee quilt "Mesmerize". This project won 1st place at the Exhibition in the Group category. Awesome team effort guys!

Dawn had this stunner to share with us. "Cheer Knot" is a raffle quilt fund raiser for Rage Athletics Cheer. They are trying to raise funds to go to Nationals in Niagara Falls in April 2018.
