May 2020 Stay in Place Sew-In and Virtual lunch break

Here on PEI, we are extremely fortunate during this pandemic. Every one of the 27 cases are recovered and there have been no hospitalizations or death.  We are grateful.  As a result, public health restrictions have eased and we are now allowed 5 people to enter and 10 to gather outside our homes.  As a result, some of our members were happy for the opportunity to see family today inside, since the weather is frightful!  A perfect day to work on our projects too!

Here we are at various times during our lunch break.  Next time the president will signal a funny faces pose so we can capture that moment!  😉

We all had various projects at different stages of completion.  Here are Anna's and Cathy's temperature quilts for 2020 up until the end of April.  Looking good ladies.  Always wonderful to have a partner to motivate us to complete.

Jean quilted her quilt, Love from Above, a Charley Harper design, on her long arm machine with a panto called Diagonal Plaid.  Beautiful.

Linda's top using the no waste method of making flying geese. It was an opportunity to delve into her batik stash to make a dent in it using the Remixed Geese pattern from Robert Kaufman.  She is working on her next row of the CQA Row by Row Quilt Along.

Lucinda was also working on her flying geese.

Janice was trying to finish a baby quilt for a good friend's new grandson.

Colleen finished quilting her foxes on her long arm and Dawn agreed to bind it!  All done, yea!  Here are pictures of the quilt on the machine and finished binding.  It is not often Colleen has the opportunity to get her quilt done in among her client's quilts.

Liz was working on her flying geese to add to her borders.

And here they are on the flimsy! This is the Unity quilt by Bonnie Hunter. Liz isn't the only  PEIMQG member participating in this free Quilt Along.

Last month, Heather won the block lotto.  As she receives the blocks, she's been playing with the layout on the design wall.

Today, Heather, was working on her mini for her CQA swap partner.  It has to be in the mail early June so we will have to wait until after her partner receives it before we see it here.

Velda was not sewing with us today, however she was kept busy with quilt related things.  She worked on her blog post: Simple Shapes = Fabulous Finishes.  Check it out at: freckledfoxquiltery.wordpress.com.

We will be having a virtual guild meeting again this month and we will see what the future holds for all of us to come back together again in person. 

Now, if only Mother Nature would cooperate for Mother's Day and not send us snow tonight...until next time...

PEI Modern Quilt Guild April 2020 Meeting

Well supposedly it is spring here on our beautiful island, however, we appear to be vacillating between winter, spring and just a hint of summer.  We have seen snow and hail along with rain and sunshine.  We are mindful of how fragile life is and are thinking of our friends and family in Nova Scotia following the tragedy last weekend.  Check out the efforts of our colleagues in the Maritime Modern Quilt Guild to support the families of the victims and first responders on their social media platforms.

We are still practicing physical distancing and we gathered together last Thursday evening to connect, laugh and celebrate accomplishments virtually.  Our president tried some different things with Zoom this time, including having some fun muting everyone and playing with the system settings!  🤣  So lesson learned, removing the ability to have the participants unmute themselves is not conducive to people answering you when you call on them to speak!  She collected pictures of all the items for show and share to be able to share on her screen so we could get up close and personal with the quilts visually.  All in all, there were 16 members in two provinces, who were able to join and have fun.

First up, we celebrated the winners of the President's Block Challenge Viewer's Choice.  You can read the background and see all the fabulous creations here. The top 3 blocks had 53% of the votes. So without further ado, here are the winning blocks, their ribbons and prizes (thank you Soak for your contribution - love Canadian products):

1st place, with 22% of the votes, Linda's block:

We held our block lotto using pictures to count the blocks made and one of our members held the draw to pick the winner with guild members as witnesses.  Heather won the 91 blocks made.  Here's a sample of a few.  I see porch drop offs or visits in the near future to collect...



After sharing the block proposed for June's draw, we moved onto the show and share item on the agenda.  Here are the pictures of the quilts shown by the members.

Anna's had the appearance of a stained glass window.  Radiant.

Janice couldn't make the meeting, but had these three lovelies to share.  The two postcards were sent to Edmonton, AB for the Quilt Canada 2020 postcard challenge - inspired by nature.  Sew realistic!

Janice's circle quilt was one she finished a few years ago and she had just got it quilted.

These flowers are a project from a quilt along by Helen Godden, a quilter from Australia.  It is called Flower Power and is great for free motion quilting practice.

Cathy does love a rainbow!  She is doing the Atmosphere quilt following along with freshlypieced.com and her mum!  Check out Cathy's fabric choices.  Cannot wait to see this one finished.

Heather shared her quilt where the quilting was something to behold by longarmer Amber Arsenault.  Here is a sneak peek at the quilt as Heather wants to submit this stunner into a few quilt shows...

 Jean collected all her blue and green scraps (and she said nary a dent has been made) to make this gorgeous quilt last year at our 2019 Spring Retreat. Recently quilted on her very own longarm!!

Linda finished her variegated spools quilt - a class taken with Krista Hennebury a few years back. She quilted it with gentle wavy lines.  Yea!  A UFO finish.

Lucinda won all kinds of charm squares at our guild retreat in 2019 playing Left, Right, Centre.  As we are missing retreat this year, here is her flimsy from her winnings.

 Roberta had a number of tops quilted while i"sew"lating.  Here are 2 versions of the popular snowflake quilts.

 Roberta also created this winter wonderland...

 and "Ombre Carnivale" using V &Co. Ombre blooms.

 She is also hoping for the beach and warmer weather...

Velda has been on a mini streak, this is her latest creation for the month of April.  Sweet.

Velda has also created a Sugar Skull quilt inspired by Paul Leger's when he was on the island a couple of years ago and this is the back of the quilt, showing the skull motif creation by fellow guild member and longarmer Colleen.

Marritza shared these photos, post meeting to share what she has been sewing...she modeled one and it was the bees knees.  You'll have to use your imagination based on these photos!

Well, that's it folks!  We will continue to practice physical distancing and will hold our May Sew-in and guild meeting virtually.  Can't wait to see what the members have created when we come together in a few weeks time.

President's Block Challenge 2019

At the December 2019 meeting/potluck, the President issued her second block challenge, this time based on the 2019 Colour of the Year (COTY).  A fat quarter of either the Pantone COTY  - Living Coral or the Kona COTY - Splash was placed in a paper bag with a number on it for the members to pick one.

The brief :

• Theme - Summer!
• Must use solid colours and the COTY fabric in the bag.
• Block sizes must be in a multiple of 6.5"; to a maximum of 24.5" square.  Could be a square or a rectangle (e.g. 12.5"x18.5").
• Return by the March 2020 meeting.

Well, due to physical distancing, we had a virtual meeting.  In preparation for the meeting, the blocks were dropped off in the bag on the front porch of the President's home or in between the front doors.  No contact allowed and the President had fun finding these bags after a message saying basically - go look!  👀

So, for about a week, in the days leading up to the March meeting, the President pressed blocks and took pictures to show the members at the meeting by sharing the screen over zoom and having a fabulous slide show.  Eighteen (18) blocks were returned!

So now it is over to you, the reader to have your say!  We want to hear from you, your friends, family, quilty peeps and maybe your fur babies (if, they have their own IP address)!  Feel free to share this post widely.  This is one social activity you can undertake while physically distancing.  👍😃

Please take our poll and vote!  The block with the most votes will have bragging rights and a prize.  There will be 2nd and 3rd ribbon winners too.  Please note, there were a few rectangular blocks which did not fit the voting picture frame format, so you will see the design wall in the background.  We would love to know what catches your eye.

The votes will be tallied and the winners announced at our April 23, 2020 meeting so this poll will be open until April 23, 2020, 12 noon, EST.  Presentations will be made to the winners at a future date when we are all together again.

March 2020 Virtual Meeting

Well, in this time of physical distancing, the guild decided to get sewical!  Thanks to the MQG mothership, we were able to book a Zoom slot so we could hold our March 26th  meeting virtually.

Fifteen members in two provinces were connected for an more than an hour.  Here you'll see thirteen of us... with our beverages of choice out of sight off screen.

Angela Walters was our role model!  After checking in with everyone, it was time for our abbreviated agenda.

Our president worked with our swap coordinator to ensure all the pouches were photographed so we could share with the members before they head to the other side of the country to the Victoria MQG.  Such talented members and we cannot wait to see what our swap partners made in exchange.

We also were able to see all the President's Block Challenge blocks submitted to date. Our President loved all the packages left between her front doors and had fun photographing the blocks using the 2019 COTY and summer theme.   We were all wishing for the snow to be gone!  There will be a future post to showcase them all, and cannot wait to see who takes the viewers' choice award.  Hope you'll come back to vote when that post is live.

We wrapped things up with show and tell. All in all, despite a few technical glitches, a great meeting and a fun way to connect while staying home.

February 2020 Sew In

A cold February morning and another Sew-In Day! We met for the February Sew-In on Saturday the 8th and although we were a small crowd we got a lot of sewing done!

We got a lot of block lotto blocks completed, worked on some other projects and even had a few visitors pop in for a chat!

Dawn stopped by for a visit and a chat. Heather stopped by as well after she got a fancy new hairdo!

Lucinda had all of her block lotto pieces ready to go and helped the rest get the right measurements to finish ours!

Janice spent some of the morning working on the binding of her beautiful handpainted mini quilt.

Lori was working on a vintage sheet block for a swap that she signed up for online. After that she worked on some of the February block lotto blocks too.

Janet worked on her block lotto blocks, while she kindly shared her iron with the rest of us there.

Linda was working on getting set up for the morning before getting sewing for the day.

Jean was happy to be cast free and working on hand binding her beautiful quilt. The colors on the white background were really outstanding.

Here is Janice helping to hold it up so we can ooh and ahh over it in all it's glory!

Next meeting is on Thursday February 27th, 7 pm, at the West Royalty Sobeys and we hope everyone can make it.

Should be a great meeting as we reveal the Medley Medallion Quilts and see who wins all the lovely block lotto blocks.
